Students, Community Join Forces to Build Accessible Toys

Several Long Beach Unified School District students, families, staff and community members recently gathered at Sato Academy of Mathematics and Science to create more than 100 accessible toys for students with disabilities as part of the school's annual Toy Hackathon event.

The event invites the local community to volunteer their time to help modify battery-operated toys for students in 菠菜网lol正规平台’s Specialized Health Care Program.

The toys are transformed into accessible playful items by installing buttons, switches or other alterations. For many disabled students, fine movements like a pinching motion using the thumb and index finger can be difficult due to severe motor impairments.

Several students from Sato were on-site during the event to teach volunteers how to cut wires, solder and “hack” toys.

The new accessible toys will be distributed to specialized healthcare classrooms in 菠菜网lol正规平台 before the upcoming winter break.
