Negotiations Continue with TALB

Bargaining teams for the Long Beach Unified School District and the Teachers Association of Long Beach continue to work toward a contract agreement. The parties are working on developing a collective bargaining agreement that recognizes and balances teacher concerns and challenges while maintaining the District’s ability to support students.

Pending agreements on compensation, the parties have reached agreement on contract language for eight of the ten proposed articles including:

  • Block schedule voting parameters
  • Recognition of counselors and psychologists as eligible bargaining unit members as well as language regarding the work year and evaluation parameters
  • Increased reimbursement limits for loss or damage to personal property
  • Protocols for grade reporting periods
  • The addition of multiple coaching stipends
  • Increased support within the Safety Article

Important Update – 菠菜网lol正规平台 Compensation Offer

The District has offered TALB a 4% ongoing raise, retroactive to July 1, 2021 and a 3% one-time raise based on earnings from July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022. As an example, the current approximate average 菠菜网lol正规平台 teacher’s salary is $96,050. Applying the 4% ongoing raise would increase that salary by $3,842 to a total of $99,892. On top of that, the additional 3% one-time payment would be $2,997.

The salary offer presented to TALB is based on a number of factors including:

  • Comparability to raises issued in surrounding districts
  • The adopted state budget for 2021-22
  • Cost Of Living Adjustment (COLA) issued by the state for 2021-22
  • Increasing employee health and welfare benefits costs. Since 2019, these expenditures rose 9.5%, leading to an annual average increase of $1,820 each year per unit member.
  • Ongoing declining enrollment that includes a loss of more than 3,000 students during the past two years
  • Ensuring that the District remains fiscally sound in the coming years
  • Prior to 2021-22, 菠菜网lol正规平台 employees received ongoing raises totaling 21% since 2013-14, outpacing the State Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 19.34% over the same time period. This increase in District-provided compensation has been provided despite COLA totaling only 10.97% over the same time frame.

The District looks forward to continuing to negotiate with TALB in an effort to reach a competitive contract agreement that validates the hard work of teachers and allows the District to carry out its mission of supporting the personal and intellectual success of every student, every day.
